Don’t Drive Drunk This Memorial Day Weekend

Police car at night. Realistic vector illusrationWith the long weekend comes outdoor parties and get-togethers that may or may not involve alcohol. Every year around this time, we see an influx of DUI/DWI cases come into the office that could have easily been avoided by taking a few simple precautions.

Avoid a DUI by Being Prepared

We live in a beachfront area, and this means that police on high alert for tipsy tourists (and residents) on interstate 64, interstate 264 and the 168 Bypass. The first and most obvious way to keep yourself and other people safe on the road is to not drink and drive. Assign a designated driver, take an Uber or a taxi cab, or stay put until you sober up.

Once you’ve committed to not driving under the influence, help others do the same. If you’re having a party and serving alcohol, consider setting out a basket for guests’ keys and checking in with them before they leave to make sure that they are good to drive. Have plenty of non-alcoholic beverages available as well.

Driving Under the Influence is a Misdemeanor in Virginia

DUI is a serious offense and a misdemeanor in the commonwealth of Virginia (unless it’s your third within ten years…then it is a felony). Save your money in fines, your time dealing with an attorney, and your reputation by choosing to be safe on the road this weekend.
